Overview Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Maryland and the District of Columbia is the result of tens of thousands of hours of work in the field, in libraries, in file rooms, at computer terminals, and at kitchen tables. The culmination of five years, from 1983 through 1987, of intensive field work by professional wildlife biologists and some 800 volunteers, it presents data 199 species of birds that breed in Maryland and the District of Columbia. Each species account contains information on habitat requirements, distribution, abundance, history, and nesting characteristics. The field observers achieved more than 99 percent coverage of the study area and generated more than 100,000 records. The atlas also includes historical distribution data collected since the mid-1800s, nest records collected during the past 100 years, data from breeding bird censuses conducted since 1942, trend data from breeding bird surveys conducted since 1966, and relative abundance information from minaret data collected since 1983.
