Overview This study first addresses the disoriented returning soldier through examining a play by Wolfgang Borchert and by Miyoshi Juro. The second section, on postwar reconstruction, couples plays by Max Frisch and Yukio Mishima. A third examination is of the atomic bomb through two very different plays by Friedrich Dürrenmatt and Betsuyaku Minoru. Finally, war crimes trials are examined, on the German side, in plays by Rolf Schneider and Peter Weiss, and on the Japanese side, in a work by Kinoshita Junji. A central message of these playwrights, writes Harada, is the need to engage in profound soul-searching rather than to adopt any particular solution. Harada is assistant professor of Japanese at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
