This volume is a collection of poems intended for use in teaching
verse to first-year university students. It provides a survey of
English verse from the Middle Ages to recent times, and from both
sides of the Atlantic. Special emphasis is given to poetry by writers
of the Great Plains region (both Canadian & American) and by
Aboriginal poets of the two countries. Works have been selected with
the teaching of poetry in mind and with other aims including thematic
interrelationship and the need to include poems which illustrate most
of the poetic techniques commonly taught in introductory classes. The
poems are arranged chronologically and include annotations to explain
words that may cause problems for students. Includes glossary &
index.
