Summary:
The purpose of this study is to identifyusing the qualitative
methodsignificant factors that influence women's decisions to leave
abusive relationships. Women who have successfully left abusive
relationships have valuable information about the process of leaving
that can be collected and organized. This qualitative study used
in-depthopen-ended questions to interview 10 women who left their
abusive relationships. The women's ages ranged from 31 to 59 years.
The women provided contextual information about leaving that gave
voice to their experiences. The literature review examines the issue
of domestic violence from the perspectives of family systems and
feminists theoriesidentifying significant factors. These factors were
used as the basis for the interview questions. The study found that
women made their decisions to leave for several different reasons.
Women with religious beliefs were able to draw upon their beliefs to
help them feel that they were not alone in their strugglesit allowed
them to call upon their higher power for strength and courageand to
view their relationships from a different perspective than they had
before. All of the women displayed resilient behaviors in the process
of leaving and afterwards when they encountered problems. Resilient
behaviors utilized by the women in this study included effectively
communicating with and maintaining an outside network that was used
for help in leavingthe ability to overcome difficultiesutilizing a
variety of strategies to facilitate leavingbelief that they had some
measure of control over outcomesthe ability to make sense of what
happened to them without taking responsibility for itand the ability
to grow through finding meaning in their experiences. A majority of
the women reported increased levels in their self-esteem after
leaving their abusive relationships. The information presented by the
women in this study can be used to assist therapists in formulating
treatment plans and agencies in providing services for abused women.
