Summary

This beautifully illustrated book takes the reader on a tour through the medieval towns of Yorkshire. The author explores the ways in which architecture and the use of space in the medieval town were the expression of an urban culture that was evolving between the tenth and fourteenth centuries and given pronounced expression by the fifteenth century. He goes on to show that this was also the expression of authority and conflict and that this process created a separate and markedly urban architectural development that took shape in the medieval period. The reader is introduced to Yorkshire's medieval urban heritage through encounters with the nature of urban society, the symbolic and dominating presence of the church in the medieval townscape, and housing, trade, and public health. In conclusion the author looks at what significance the Yorkshire medieval town holds for us today.
